The audacity of a fundraiser in 2021
Dear Diary,
Per Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word Audacity (noun | au·dac·i·ty) is defined as intrepid boldness; bold or arrogant disregard of normal restraints. This word, as many others in the English language, can be used in a positive and negative manner. For 2021, my hope is that as fundraisers, prospect development professionals, database managers and all who work in the nonprofit industry, we gain a positive audacious attitude.
We all know how 2020 was, the ways in which we felt throughout the year, the highs and lows, and the hope that drifted into our lives towards the end of the year. Everything was evident and lived. Now, as we look ahead, the foundation and groundwork for change and innovation that has been crafted needs cementing – a thoughtful and intentional build-up similar to construction workers laying brick, cement, brick, and cement to form a glorious red brick house. We have to work together to build-up the initiatives and ideas sought for in 2020.
When forced to pivot many charged philanthropic leaders, billionaires, foundations and grantors with the responsibility to do more and be better, in accordance with their privilege and power.
It was these expectations that inspired my understanding of a positive audacity for change.
An audacious fundraiser:
Does the introspective work needed to be a great extrospective leader, professional, friend, board member, family member, and partner
When was the last time you had a conversation with yourself about your purpose in the nonprofit industry and how you show up?
Connects with new people, creates space to relate, and disseminates resources
Moving forward, could there be opportunities for you to better connect with new and different people – expand your network? It is prudent to create time and space to relate to others in the industry, seeing as learned experiences can be an incomparable teacher. What resources do you have in your personal arsenal that someone could definitely benefit from? For example, what book could you recommend?
Speaks the truth and lets honesty prevail
We all know the flaws of the nonprofit industry, but can we boldly show up everyday in our roles, working to bring incremental and foundational changes? Please note that conversations can begin this process. Recognizing that reactions may be negative from those whose ears burn when they hear the truth, I say – stand confident in the true form that reflects back at you in a mirror when you are intentionally advocating for equity at your organization. Because in honesty, that is the only reflection that matters.
To be this audacious person, you need a bold attitude and a positive outlook on what you hope to build or become. There is so much work to be done, and you hold a significant seat.
I wish you all a great and special new year, full of creativity, courage, and lessons that can only spur more greatness.
Until next time, February 15th!
