10 questions for prospect development professionals

Dear Diary,

I would like to present a few questions that I hope those in prospect development can keep in mind as their careers potentially mold and restructure within the industry, and under the overarching umbrella of Fundraising.

Ask yourself...

1. Have I ever reached out to others in the field for mentorship, advice, or just to hear about their careers? 

2. Have I attended a conference, specifically an Apra conference, at least once?

3. Have I challenged my skills lately?

4. Have I asked the question of "why" to something that has always happened a certain way at work?

5. Have I joined my local Apra?

6. Am I following at least five Prospect Development professionals on social media (LinkedIn is encouraged)?

7. Am I being an advocate for my profession? 

8. Am I still excited by research or is it just my job?

9. Am I speaking up for myself?

10. Am I working with, and utilizing different coworkers?

 

In real-time, as I write this, I have changed my mind in regards to my audience. I wish to pose these questions to everyone in the profession. First, millennials, because WE must control, retain, and expand a profession that some believe can be automated. And second, to everyone else because WE all need to ask ourselves these questions now-and-then for reflection.
